Coronation Magnums #1

With the Coronation firmly on the horizon, what would be better than enjoying a few magnums to accompany lunch after the event.

So with that in mind, here is the first of three missives putting forward a few suggestions of what might be immensely enjoyable. The first selection come from Berrys, the next one will feature three wines from Yapp Brothers, and then the final one will cover last minute magnums from the high street retailers.

Nibbles & Starters - Champagne

Berry Bros. & Rudd Champagne by Mailly, Grand Cru, Extra Brut 2015

Berrys - £82.00 - per magnum

There is a delicate refinement about this Champagne that is very appealing. The components are in harmony with a balance of structure, light acidity, flavours of stone fruits, and some considerable length. I could drink this all day. Although clearly labelled ‘Extra Brut’ it seems much rounder, and dare I say, softer than expected. Well constructed elegance. It comes from the Grand Cru village of Mailly in the Montagne de Reims. I shall certainly be enjoying magnums of this delicious Champagne on Saturday 6th May. As a footnote, I anticipate that this wine will improve over the coming years. So if you buy it and like it, then acquire a case or two and let them settle in the cellar for the next 5 years. You will not be disappointed.

Coronation Chicken - South African Cabernet Sauvignon blend

Anwilka, Stellenbosch, South Africa 2018

Berrys - £55.00 - per magnum

If the spice element in the Coronation Chicken that is going to be served a week on Saturday is generous, then what could be better than this exquisite South African blend: Cabernet Sauvignon 63%, Syrah 32% and Petit Verdot 5%. Richly opulent, concentrated, tons of dark fruits balancing the scales alongside energetic acidity, with fine tannins and a complex finish that just wants the next glass. Superbly crafted and an absolute delight to drink - obviously perfect with a spicy dish, and the bonus being that I think I have found the BBQ wine for the Summer of 2023. Hits the scrummy category.

Roast Lamb - Classic Rioja

Viña Ardanza, Reserva, La Rioja Alta, Rioja 2015

Berrys - £60.00 - per magnum

I’ve rattled on about this wine before. It’s just a flawless example of well-made Rioja. The 2015 vintage is drinking well today and will easily keep for another decade. If you are a fan of these Tempranillo-based wines from Northern Spain, then this ticks all the boxes.
